Objectives
Abstract A currently-underway EPSRC programme of work, 'Role of Interfaces in Facture Resistance of Power Generation Materials: Combined Multiscale Modelling/Experimental Approach', commenced in December/January 2003/04. This is conjoint between Professors PEJ Flewitt, University of Bristol, AG Crocker, University of Surrey, JF Knott, University of Birmingham and V Randle, University of Wales, Swansea (GR/S45263/01; GR/S45270/01; GR/S45287/01 and GR/S45294/01). As part of the dissemination process, all four contributed to an EPSRC Network meeting held in September 2004 at Loughborough University. This network, entitled Grain Boundary Engineering, brings together representatives from the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA. At this particular meeting following a presentation of the Bristol and Surrey University contributions by Drs G Hughes and G Smith, there was an extended discussion with Professor Pavel Lejcek which led to him offering to grow a dedicated tri-crystal to enable part of the research programme to be undertaken more rigorously and to provide a better link with the geometrical modelling work at Surrey University. The tri-crystal will use Fe3%Si material that is the basis of the research being undertaken by the PhD student Mr Fabio Sorbello at the University of Bristol. In particular it will be used for:(1) considering specific brittle fracture-grain boundary interactions; and(2) to prepare thin foil samples for examination in the SuperSTEM at Daresbury.Professor Pavel Lejcek is an internationally recognised researcher from the Institute of Physics AS CR, Prague, in the Czech Republic. He is an acknowledged expert in establishing and relating the crystallography and composition of grain boundaries to their mechanical, chemical and physical properties.The current research grant made no provision for this unforseen collaboration and there is a need to fund:(1) Visits by the Bristol and Surrey University researchers to the Institute of Physics AS CR,Prague.(2) Visits by Professor P Lejcek to the UK in particular to attend the existing research project review meetings over the two years remaining on this current research project
